Hypnotherapy, how does that work?

Hypnotherapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses relaxation, concentration, and intense attention to achieve a heightened state of consciousness. The use of trance (or hypnosis) is the core of this therapy. When under hypnosis, you put your mind and body into a heightened state of learning, making you more susceptible to suggestions for self-improvement or behavior modification. The goal is to put the subconscious and conscious mind in harmony, which in turn helps give you greater control over your behavior and emotions.

What is hypnosis?

Just think of being completely absorbed in a good film. If someone comes in at that moment, you won’t notice it. Stimuli from outside are just as noticeable at that moment. Hypnosis is a state of concentrated attention, deep relaxation and a change in consciousness. Such an experience is called trance. Trance is therefore no more or less than a state of concentrated attention.

Hypnosis is the therapeutic agent that I use to make you come into contact with your subconscious. It is a state of deep relaxation in which we bypass the critical mind. Awareness is gradually directed from the outer world to the inner world, and it becomes easier to focus on significant aspects of the inner world in a relaxed mindful manner. In hypnosis you have greater imagination, deeper relaxation and stronger concentration.

Do I have control during hypnosis?

A common view with hypnosis is that you lose control or that it lies with the person who is putting you into hypnosis. This only applies to hypnosis such as theater hypnosis. With therapeutic hypnosis you always have control over yourself.

Modern hypnotherapy makes targeted use a natural form of trance where you remain alert, aware and focused on what you are doing.

Under hypnosis, your mind understands more about unconscious processes. This way you can work on emotional, psychological or physical complaints.

Contraindications

Hypnotherapy is a safe procedure when done by a trained therapist. Hypnotherapy is not mind control.

However, hypnosis carries some few risks. Hypnosis may be contraindicated for individuals suffering from psychiatric disorders, severe depression, dementia. Certain medical problems, or who are actively abusing drugs or alcohol, or who are delusional or hallucinatory.
